In 1976, Frank Deford, a premier sportswriter from Sports Illustrated dubbed Dwight Stones, “The Mouth That Soars”, because he both flew over the high bar in competition and spoke articulately about a variety of issues. Dwight Stones has continued his outspoken nature with a career in television broadcasting, sharing his expertise in the world of athletic competition, while expanding into the arena of business.

His athletic credentials are impressive. Ten times he set the World Record in the High Jump. He won Bronze medals in both the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games. In 1984, at the age of 30, he made his unprecedented third Olympic team when he set his 13th American Record to win the Olympic Trials.

No American has dominated the high jump event like Dwight Stones. During his 16-year career, he won an incredible 19 National Championship titles. He was twice voted World Indoor Athlete of the Year, by Track & Field News, and remains history’s All-Time #1 Ranked American High Jumper. In 1998, the highest honor in the sport was bestowed upon Dwight. He was inducted into the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame.

Since retiring from competition in 1988, Dwight has concentrated his efforts on a career in television broadcasting, motivational speaking and real estate investment and sales. He has been a color analyst for all three major networks, covering sporting events around the globe. From 1988 through 2012 he covered the most celebrated athletic competitions in the world, the Summer Olympic Games from Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing, & London for NBC Sports. NBC expanded Dwight’s assignments by putting him on the 2002, 2006, & 2010 Winter Olympic Games from Salt Lake City, Torino, Italy, & Vancouver B.C.

Dwight has been an integral part of NBC’s World Track and Field Championships coverage from 1983 through 2013 including in 1999 in Seville, Spain. A broadcast that won an Emmy for “Best Live Event Turnaround.” This summer, Dwight will cover the Rio Summer Olympic Games for ESPN International. He’ll be an in-studio analyst for the first week and then shift over to host/play by play duties when the track & field competition begins.
